The purpose of the present study was to examine the age-hardening behavior of a Cu-free Pd-Ag alloy with dendritic structures by means of hardness test, field-emission scanning electron microscopic observations, X-ray diffraction study and energy dispersive spectrometer analysis. By isothermal aging of the solution-treated specimen at 400 ¡É and 450 ¡É, the hardness increased constantly from the initial stage of aging process and reached a maximum value, about 240 Hv, and further aging caused continuous hardness decrease. The solution-treated specimen was composed of the two phases, that is Ag-rich matrix of face-centered cubic structure and InPd particle-like or dendrite structure of body-centered cubic structure. Age-hardening seemed to be caused by lattice distortion which is resulted from the precipitation of the InPd phase in the Ag-rich matrix, and softening by prolonged aging was caused by coarsening of the lamellar precipitates.
